LEARNING TO LISTEN
LEARNING
TO LISTEN
We listen with each of our senses in a way, when we pay attention as all living creatures can do.
Listening with our ears and breathing and listening deep in our hara, with straight spine between heaven and earth; secure with the soles of our feet, through the skin, we hear and feel vibration and the listening teaches, informs, opens the heart. To the people, the place, the world. Evelyn Glennie the musician explains this in a simple profound way.
As we listen the forever of time, ancient, past, present, future of practising being present occurs.
It unites’ soul, body and mind to be present every moment inside ourselves. To naturally experience The Five Transformations of nature: gently, humbly, with humour, with power; is to know in peace and confidence who we are and why we are here, and through all difficulties learn to return to this sacred place. This is more important than ever as the climate changes, our planet changes and our land, clean, clear river water, soil, trees, vegetables, the notion of the skill of manual work to grow natural food, natural fibres and all true nourishment from the air to the water need as much attention as individuals.
Sun, moon, stars, nourishes the soul and life force, physical body, intuition, intellect. Our ability to respond, smile, laugh, cry, create, attract, repel, protect, nurture, love. Aside from some brilliant medical achievements, I offer the view here that there is nothing in our Universe to which anything that is artificial can contribute to One Peaceful World of health and unity. I believe that without judgement, this can be a primary teaching and practise to assist ourselves and clients to regain the freedom of health and vision for the future.
The Five Transformations are a dynamic cycle of changes that Relate all energy and matter to five elements:- Fire, Soil (earth), Metal, Water, and tree (wood).
Rooted in the teachings of traditional Chinese medicine, the system provides a paradigm by which one may understand the profound harmony that exists between man/woman and the external environment.
Health and happiness are simply manifestations of one’s ability to flow and adjust to the energies that are creating us. Long ago (and not so far away) our bodies intuitively accommodated these changes.
We were not apart from nature and we incorporated her great wisdom in our being and behaviour.
As we became “civilized” and objectified our surroundings, we separated psyche from body and in the process lost that visceral knowledge. The process of change from season to season is gradual and reiterates the larger cycle of Conception-Birth-Maturity-Aging-Death.
Each energy evolves from the quality of its predecessor and likewise nurtures the birth of its successor.
Thus Water nourishes tree (Kidneys support Liver), Tree fuels Fire, Fire creates Soil, when these energies are in balance, harmony prevails. Most imbalance or illness occurs when the energy flowing from any of the five elements is too great or too weak.
For example, excessive Lung energy (Metal/Autumn) may adversely influence Liver energy (Tree/Spring) or over-active Heart may harm Lung energy. Seen in terms of the five elements; Fire melts metal, Metal cuts Tree, Tree drains Soil, Soil blocks Water, Water quenches Fire.
These imbalances of excess or overriding energy form a pentacle on the diagram. Imbalances of deficiency are best noted on the wheel of supporting energy, the linear progression of the seasons.
In this case weak Liver energy may result in weak Heart energy – just as a scrawny tree provides little fire, and so it goes.
In theory The Five Transformations describe an elegant and historically interesting view of nature. In practice, they provide an invaluable intuitive guide that reaffirms the connection and interdependence of all beings with our world.
