Gratitude
and the Body:
A Gentle Practice for Digestive and Emotional Ease
As the seasons shift, many of us turn inward to reflect on what truly sustains us. Gratitude is not only an attitude—it is a way of living in rhythm with the world. When we genuinely appreciate what nourishes us, the body often responds with greater ease: softer digestion, steadier emotions and a calmer mind.
In Jin Shin Jyutsu, a Japanese art of self-care, there is an area known as Safety Energy Lock 14, located at the base of the rib cage. This centre reflects our ability to “digest” life—food, emotions and experiences. It also resonates closely with the energy of gratitude: the capacity to receive, soften and flow.
Supporting this area creates room for appreciation to move more freely through the body.
Digestive and Physical Benefits
A genuine sense of gratitude naturally relaxes the diaphragm and upper abdomen, which may help ease:
- Stomach discomfort
- Bloating, gas or heartburn
- Tension around the hips and thighs
- Snoring or teeth grinding
- Episodes of vertigo or imbalance
- Colic or hiccups in babies
Emotional and Mental Benefits
When we settle into gratitude, the nervous system often follows. We may notice:
- Reduced worry and stress
- Less irritability or reactivity
- A softening of competitiveness, comparison or jealousy
- A clearer, more grounded sense of self
Holding SEL 14 while cultivating gratitude invites ease back into both body and mind.
A Simple Gratitude Practice
These hand placements are gentle, quiet and can be done at any moment of the day. Let your breath move naturally.
- Hands on the Base of the Rib Cage
Place one hand on each side of your rib cage.
Bring to mind something—big or small—you feel grateful for today. (10 minutes)
- SEL 14 + SEL 19 (Elbow)
Place your left hand on the right SEL 14
and your right hand on the left SEL 19 (left elbow).
Reverse sides whenever you wish.
Let gratitude settle with each exhale. (10 minutes)
- Hold the Ring Finger
This simple gesture supports digestion and emotional openness.
As you hold it, silently offer a gentle thank you. (10 minutes)
- SEL 14 AND SEL 1
Place your right hand on the left SEL 14
and your left hand on the right High SEL 1 (upper thigh, just above the knee).
Stay for a few breaths. (10 minutes)
- Hands on the Base of the Rib Cage
