Alex Jack is an author, teacher, and dietary counselor with more than fifty years of experience in macrobiotics and natural health.

Raised in Evanston, Illinois, he grew up in a family deeply engaged in international peace and civil rights movements. At age twelve, he visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki, an experience that left a lasting impression on his life’s direction. During college, he studied philosophy and religion in India, served as a civil rights worker in Mississippi, and later worked as a correspondent in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam War.

After joining the macrobiotic community in Boston, Alex became editor-in-chief of East West Journal, executive director and senior teacher at the Kushi Institute, and director of the One Peaceful World Society. Working closely with Michio and Aveline Kushi, he contributed to the development of macrobiotic education, publishing, and medical outreach, co-authoring numerous influential books, including The Book of Macrobiotics, The Cancer Prevention Diet, Diet for a Strong Heart, The Macrobiotic Path to Total Health, One Peaceful World, The Gospel of Peace: Jesus’s Teachings of Eternal Truth,and Aveline: The Life and Dream of the Woman Behind Macrobiotics Today.

His broader body of work includes The Mozart Effect (with Don Campbell), literary editions and commentaries on Hamlet and As You Like It by Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare, and visionary titles such as The Circle of the Dance, Spiral of History, and Planetary Commonwealth.

Alex has taught internationally at institutions including the Rosas Dance Company in Brussels, the Escola Macrobiótica in Portugal, Kushi Institute of Europe in the Netherlands, and the Ohsawa Center in Tokyo, and has presented at venues ranging from the Zen Temple in Beijing to the Cardiology Institute of St. Petersburg and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre in London.

In 2000, he co-founded Planetary Health, a nonprofit educational organization, and helped lead the Amberwaves grassroots campaign to protect brown rice and other natural foods from genetic engineering.

Alex lives in Prague with his wife, Danka, where they host international online macrobiotic conferences, courses, and give macrobiotic and 9 Star Ki consultations. His daughter, Mariya, is an organic farmer and author of two macrobiotic cookbooks.
