5 TIPS

for Wintery Months

PLAN POSITIVE CHANGES

Incredibly coloured leaves, backlit by the sun, are falling and already turning into leaf mould for the soil. Meanwhile, the tree will go deep inside itself over the next months to prepare for Spring. Likewise, we can let go of those things that perhaps brought so much to us this year and are now complete, freeing us to plan to make changes:

  • Use the ipad only half as much so we can
  • Spend more time looking around us, being present, observing, noticing life;
  • Choose not to have any takeaway foods, cartons or straws forever;
  • Start to enjoy cooking at home.

OUR WORLD OUR  FUTURE

Contemplation: as well as ourselves, how can we help future generations of all living beings to live and be nourished in a healthy world? Do we want 5G and chemically-sprayed crops? Let’s learn to grow food in our garden again.

Professor Dame Sally Davies said in September: “Today’s children are drowning in a flood of unhealthy food and drink options, compounded by insufficient opportunities for being active…..I want to see our children’s health, not company profits, put at the forefront of government policy. It is every child’s right to live in a world that promotes, not harms, their health.”

CONSCIOUSLY WARM-UP

In the colder Winter months – November, December, January, February – let’s slow right down. Consider the reality of the climate and those this year who have no home but survive in a flimsy tent. Can we halve the amount of heating we use in the home, car, and workplace? We can strengthen our own circulation and resilience by body brushing and taking short, brisk walks. Warm-up by wearing many layers, preferably cotton or wool tights, sweaters, jackets, trousers, etc. Can you halve your use of electricity? Do you overfill your kettle when you switch it on for a cuppa, leave lights on, run the washing machine half empty? What a great challenge!

PLANTING TREES

Give the most beautiful gift: a newly planted tree dedicated to a loved one for a birthday or family members for any major cultural celebration. Within the lifetime of a grandchild the tree could be 70 years old and go on for a further 300 years. Each tree contributes oxygen, wildlife habitat, and helps to maintain soil structure, reducing erosion. Find a charity, such as the Woodland Trust, a council or another organisation who promote tree planting; or plant a tree in your garden. It’s tree-planting season from now until March.

BOOST YOUR HEALTH

This is a diagram of the path of planet Venus – an example of the beauty, purpose and health in our universe. Promote the purpose and health of all the wonderful organs in your body by nourishing them with good quality food. It does not have to cost the earth – choose seasonal and local – and it’s best when we cook it ourselves.
